Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Always Wear Sunglasses

By Team BEINGBAR

This article describes the Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Always Wear Sunglasses. Some of the reasons you know. But others might surprise you!

Sunglasses, Shades, Sunnies,... They are the ultimate fashion accessories. Most people own at least 3 pairs. Not because of differences in their functionality, but because of their looks and style.

And with that big focus on style (no pun intended), you would almost forget that originally sunglasses were invented to see clearer in bright and sunny environments. And most importantly to protect your eyes from the sun. As our climate is changing, and the number of sun hours is slowly rising (depending on the year) the importance of sunglasses because of their protective qualities is rising as well.

In this article we will list the Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Always Wear Your Sunglasses! Here we go...

the Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Always Wear Your Sunglasses:
  • To protect the eyes and eyelids from UV radiation
  • To protect your skin around the eyes from UV radiation
  • To see clearer in bright and and sunny environments
  • To protect your eyes from bright light for other reasons
  • To protect your eyes from harmful UV radiation from solariums and tanning beds
  • To protect your eyes from Blue-Light
  • Visual adaptation from light to dark
  • They make you look awesome
  • Wear them as a (fashion) statement
  • Wear them because of their lens functionality (polarized and colored lenses)

The top 10 reasons why you should always wear your sunglasses:

Reason 1:

To protect the eyes and eyelids from UV radiation

Ultraviolet radiation (UV) can damage your eyes. UV radiation is invisible to us and therefore a “silent assassin”, in the sense that you don’t realize how harmful it can be.

UV is composed of 3 main wavelengths: UVA, UVB and UVC. Almost all UVB rays are absorbed by the cornea (the outer layer, on the front of your eyes)  and therefore don’t penetrate through to the retina. UVA radiation, on the other hand, passes through the cornea to the lens and retina of the eye. Almost all UVC radiation is filtered out by our planet’s atmosphere.

Wearing sunglasses will protect your eyes against harmful UVA and UVB rays. For this they need to have a UV400 rating. Most sunglasses have this rating, including the entire range of BEINGBAR shades.

Reason 2:

To protect your skin around the eyes from UV radiation

Illnesses, like cancer of the eyelids and skin around the eyes, unfortunately is more common than you might expect. For this reason it makes sense to wear sunglasses outdoors as often as you can. Also for activities that you would not immediately associate with shades. Examples are driving, cycling, sports, taking a walk or other activities.

Reason 3:

To see clearer in bright and and sunny environments

One of the main reasons why sunglasses were invented is to make you see clearer in bright environments. Needless to say it is important to see clearly. For some activities more than for others, like driving your car. If you really want the full effect you can choose special lenses that are polarized. These remove additional glare and are perfect for driving during the day.

Reason 4:

To protect your eyes from bright light for other reasons

The fourth reason why you should always wear sunglasses is this one: to protect your eyes from bright light. Bright light and glare can cause other inconveniences besides not seeing clearly. Many people experience headaches and sometimes even nausea. Sunglasses can help prevent that. And even if you’re not susceptible to these symptoms, you will always experience more overall comfort by wearing your sunglasses.

Reason 5:

To protect your eyes from harmful UV radiation from solariums and tanning beds

First of all, let us get this out of the way: try not to use these! There is more and more scientific evidence that suggests that these devices do tons of irreversible damage to your skin. So ask yourself if your tan is really worth it (unless you need it against specific skin conditions, like rashes, psoriasis and the likes). You can use sunglasses to protect you from the UV radiation. This can slow down cataracts and macular degeneration. It can also help protect the skin around your eyes (the skin shielded by the sunglasses) and eyelids from skin cancer

Reason 6:

To protect your eyes from Blue-Light

Long-term exposure to the blue and violet part of the solar spectrum has been implicated as a risk factor for (age-related) macular degeneration. What we call “blue light” is a special light included in the UV spectrum of sunlight, which causes severe photochemical retinal damage. This, in its turn, is a leading cause of blindness in the western world.

Besides that, blue light is reported to also disrupt the normal sleeping pattern. How this works, is that it impacts the nervous system, which affects the regulation of the natural sleep hormone melatonin.

While many suggest that the dangers of blue light primarily come from the digital screens of your smart phones and computer monitors, there is little evidence supporting it. By far the most blue light comes from the sun, with just a fraction of it coming from your devices.

Your sunglasses protect your eyes from blue light from the sun, especially polarized lenses. The entire BEINGBAR range of sunglasses is equipped with polarized lenses and will provide you maximum protection. You could theoretically wear your sunglasses indoors to protect you from the 0.1% blue light versus from the sun. However, they would not be comfortable because of the lack of light indoors.

Reason 7:

Visual adaptation from light to dark

Spending too much time in bright sunlight without sunglasses can affect your eyes' ability to adapt to lower light levels. What this simply means is that you do not adjust your eyes to evening- and indoor activities. This can make driving at night a dangerous endeavour

Reason 8:

They make you look awesome

Sunglasses are becoming more and more a fashion item. Depending on your style and mood your sunglasses can contribute to how you look and even how you feel (remember that you feel great, when you look good!). Make sure you choose sunglasses that really match who you are. Consciously select your shades to match your style and it could make you feel incredible!

Reason 9:

Wear them as a (fashion) statement

Many pieces of clothing and garments you can wear as a fashion statement. Think of the once iconic white t-shirts with a message. And this can apply to sunglasses too. Some brands represent a certain lifestyle or state of mind. And by wearing them you show others that you support that lifestyle. This applies specifically for brands that are very distinct in their brand message, like that promote sustainability.

Reason 10:

Wear them because of their lens functionality (polarized and colored lenses)

Polarized lenses can make you see clearer because they filter out light reflection from horizontal surfaces. Especially during activities such as driving, skiing and watersports the sunglasses with this kind of lenses are almost a requirement. They reduce glare and make you see sharper and clearer.

Other lenses are colored and every color can give a different effect. Like blue lenses that make the sky really "pop", amber or brown colored lenses that make some people feel at easy and comfortable. Yellow and amber tinted lenses block more blue light than lenses with other colors.
