Eco-friendly Sunglasses

“Sustainability and eco-friendly fashion should be our top priority now.

The world’s heating up and it’s not just In the summer months anymore.”

Grown Eyewear

This young Australian brand sells bold designs with an unashamed wooden look, championing its vision of an original, organic and sustainable product. Their mission was simple: provide consumers with eyewear that “looks great and does good”. We can safely say “mission accomplished”. Not only are the frames made of sustainable and ethically sourced materials, but for every pair of sunglasses sold, 12 underprivileged kids will get sight-restoring surgery. Our favorite design is the Meraki Walnut Silver, a 1950’s inspired club master design made from Californian Walnut wood.

Proof Eyewear

Proof is a family business, founded and run by three brothers from Idaho with crafty hands and sawdust in their veins. They always knew they wanted to work with wood, and decided that building one of the most eco-friendly sunglasses on the market was the way to go. Their products are handcrafted from sustainable wood, cotton-based acetate and recycled aluminum. In addition to making sure their sunglasses are environmentally sound, a portion of every purchase goes to a worthy cause like cataract operations for those in need. Be prepared to stand out with the Grove Wood sunnies with its rounded frames and double bar metal bridge.

3. Sea2See

This ocean-friendly brand sums themselves up simply as “Sustainable Vision”. Putting the planet first, Sea2See sunglasses are made from 100% recovered marine plastic from our seas and oceans, so you know that every purchase goes to making things better for our marine life. Their Karma frames are gorgeous, with that hand-made Italian design looking great with any well-cut suit.

4. Sticks and Sparrow

Sticks and Sparrow has taken an innovative approach to eco-friendly eyewear, creating their handcrafted frames out of plants, bamboo and cork. The front of the frames are made of a plant-based acetate, the temples of bamboo, the ends of which are wrapped in cork for added comfort. Cork is a great alternative-material since taking it from the bark doesn’t actually damage the trees at all. Bamboo on the other hand is quick-growing and doesn’t require replanting - both of these together makes Sticks and Sparrow’s designs one of the most nature-friendly frames on the market. There’s also a huge variety of designs available, so there should be something to suit everyone.

6. WearPanda

WearPanda is one of the kickstarter legends, meeting its kickstarter goal back in 2012 in just three days. Eight years later they’re still going strong, trying to make the world a better place. Their products are all made from sustainable, non-waste materials like bamboo, beeswax and recycled plastics. Moreover, nothing on WearPanda’s site (they’re also into watches and sweaters) is sold without giving back to those in need, with charity partners including "One Tree Planted" and "Optometry Giving Sight". We really like their best-selling frame the Monroe; go for the wayfarer design in black/red for a classic look that packs a punch.

7. Peep Eye Wear

Ok, so with these guys the eco-friendly concept is slightly different, focusing on the waste economy that is so prevalent in today’s society. Rather than taking more from the environment, Peep looks to redesign, refurbish and restore vintage sunglasses to their former glories. If you’re after the retro look with a story to tell, head to Peep and check out their collection.

9. Waterhaul

When Waterhaul goes fishing, they’re not looking for your typical catch - in fact, they’d be happy not to get anything in their nets at all. That’s because they trawl the oceans for plastics that have found their way into the marine environment, which they then repurpose into the stylish sunglasses they sell today. Waterhaul don’t have a huge collection of sunglasses (just three designs), but what they lack in quantity, they make up for in quality. The Fitzroy has a chic square-frame look suitable for both men and women and comes with a lifetime guarantee.

10. w.r.yuma

Heard about the circular economy? If not, w.r.yuma is going to tell you all about it. This small sunglasses designer wants to “close the loops” when it comes to production and waste, taking discarded materials and reusing them time and time again. They can trace the origins of every pair of sunglasses sold, tracking exactly where they’ve been and how you have come to close the loop on waste. Look good and feel good - sounds ideal to us.
